We have five dogs, Decker, Cooper, Mac, Gator and Sophie. We have only had Sophie and Gator for a few months. They are brother and sister. Because our dogs are inside dogs they have not been fixed. When we got Sophie, I told my husband we need to get her spayed. He disagreed, thinking someday it might be nice if she had puppies.
Recently, Sophie, went into heat (she is eight months old and weighs five pounds). We have only had male dogs so we were in for a rude awakening. The first week wasn’t too bad. Little did we know it would get so much worse. This is where the nightmare begins. We had constant dog fights (Decker vs every dog), relentless barking (Gator) and annoying whining (Cooper). Mac is the most chill dog of them all. The big dog, Decker, had to be separated from Mac and Cooper. One day while breaking up a fight, Decker bit my husband, Cliff. Being the stubborn man that I know and love, he refused medical care, his hand was swollen and he had trouble moving it. I am sure when it starts to turn black, he will then think it’s time to see the doctor.
By the end of the second week, we had not had a full nights sleep and we no longer cared about our furniture, moving Gator and Decker into the living-room. Gator is the only dog that Decker will tolerate. Decker wouldn’t sleep or eat and just stood at the gate waiting to get a glimpse of Sophie. It’s really quite stalkerish. Cooper is one of those dogs that humps anything that moves, the male dogs, the cat, and most recently, my leg while I was trying to sleep. Needles to say Copper isn’t allowed in the bedroom at bedtime.
One morning as I was getting ready for work, I walked into the living-room, only to find that the door to the bedroom had been eaten by Decker. I was planning on eventually replacing that door. It looks like sooner rather than later. By the end of the day, there was a big hole at the bottom that Gator uses as a doggy door.
I decided to Google how long females stay in heat. WTH? It said 18 to 24 days. How would we ever last that long.? I then decided to take matters into my own hands and made an appointment for Sophie to get spayed. Cooper will be our first male dog to be neutered with an appointment the following week. The cat seems happy with that decision.
