For Christmas I received a gift certificate for yoga from my good friend. We made plans to go after the holidays. I’m embarrassed to say I thought of an excuse NOT to go for the next three months. She finally stopped asking me. Six months later I finally went and I loved it!
I didn’t enjoy the mirrors that covered the walls. Boy, do I look out of shape. I tried to avoid eye contact with myself. As soon as I got down on my mat I began wondering if I would be able to get off the floor when it was all over.
I couldn’t tell you the name of any of the positions that the in structor taught. I was concentrating on my breathing the entire time. Apparently, I have been breathing wrong for the last 52 years. I also found that I hold my breath, when I am not breathing in and out my mouth.
I made it through the entire hour with some difficulty. At the end of the session the instructor gave us each essential oil to rub on our feet. She covered our eyes with a mask containing lavender. Needless to say, I was so relaxed I drifted off to sleep. She announced that the session was over. For a minute I was confused where I was. I knew I wasn’t at home because there wasn’t a dog laying on me. Somehow, I managed to get up off the mat by myself. Wow, I didn’t realize this yoga thing would work so fast! I’m almost positive without this yoga session, I wouldn’t have been able to get up with out help from my friend.
I knew I would be sore the next day but I sure wasn’t expecting it to be my wrist and ankles. After breathing correctly for the entire day even my lungs hurt. You know you are out of shape when even your lungs are sore. With that said, I am looking forward to going again next week.
